The American Optical story starts in Southbridge, Massachusetts, where William Beecher began making silver spectacle frames above his jewelry shop in 1833. The business was incorporated as the American Optical Company in 1869.
An American Classic
Over nearly two centuries, AO became one of the best-known names in American eyewear. Its sunglasses have been worn by pilots, by presidents, and by NASA astronauts, which is quite a resume for a pair of frames.
